The reinvention of the milk crate

Thursday, June 14th, 2012

Oh the milk crate, the ever-useful, modernly modular, simple and clean little box of wonder. I’ve been using a variation on the milk crate to hold records for years, but their usefulness doesn’t stop there. Quirky has re-imagined this little genius or organization into an up-to-date interchangeable storage solution, the CRATE.

Quirky is an interesting website/service in and of itself. Self-touting as “the easiest way to bring your ideas to life”, they are a social product development company. People submit their great product ideas, they get made. Easy peasy and AWESOME.

Black interiors, with style

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

Black is the new white. It’s totally fresh, extremely BOLD and a fantastically daring design statement. I first became intrigued with using black as an interior, and exterior color, via the lovely Anna Dorfman’s blog, Door Sixteen. Since then, I’ve seen black popping up everywhere on design blogs, TV and in people’s homes. Morbid, dark and scary it’s definitely not. WebUrbanist.com put together a great collection of black interiors and design concepts that just might make you reconsider your beige on white motif.

Dressing up your abode with tile

Monday, September 12th, 2011

Long gone are the days when putting down tile in your kitchen or bath is all about function and less about design aesthetic. I love the retro 50′s pink bathrooms bathed in tile from floor to ceiling, but these days tile options offer a little more pizazz for your project.

Urban Home Magazine put together a great little feature on tile accents (like ceramic, porcelain, tile, glass… and more), like jewelry for your home, that can really add some wow factor.

Retro modern ornamental metal porch columns

Thursday, September 8th, 2011

Sometimes my favorites things about a house are the old bits, all the pieces that still bear the craftmanship and aesthetic of a much different time decades ago. That’s why I was delighted to read Pam Kueber’s guide to ornamental metal porch columns at RetroRenovation.com.

Those mid-century modern ornamental metal porch columns that are prevalent on 50s and 60s houses predominantly are one of my absolute favorite parts of that era of homes. To me they tell a story, and display a certain attitude and design sense of that time.

Pam shares the top few companies that she found in her research that make and sell these sorts of columns. The post is also a great educational article on how they’re made, when to use them and how to find out more about them! Thanks Pam!

Vetrazzo recycled glass material

Monday, August 29th, 2011

One sure way to add some pizazz to your kitchen or bathroom is with a great countertop material. The options are endless these days, from stainless steel to concrete, to acrylic to tile to granite and back again. And those are just a FEW options to choose from.

While researching interesting countertop materials this weekend (and fantasizing about the crazy color combos and fun aesthetic I could create) I came across this fabulous Vetrazzo recycled glass material. Vetrazzo® is a recycled glass surface comprised of 100% recycled glass. It has 85% glass per volume, tons of color palette options and can be a truly unique piece of art!

Just a few options available:

It’s recycled, STUNNING and way different than your standard granite. I’m sold!

Mix and match wallpaper

Wednesday, August 24th, 2011

This Mix ‘n’ Match 11 wallpaper collection from Kirath Ghundoo is a fantastic idea. Great for a small space, or even more bombastic in a large airy space, the idea of mixing and matching like (but not totally similar) patterns and colors to create a glorious panel of wallpaper feeds my inner love of all things color and pattern.

The collection features seven patterns intended to mixed and matched til your heart’s content. What a fresh way to look at decorating some walls!

Guide to Mid-Century Modern Sofa Buying

Monday, August 22nd, 2011

It can be a challenge to find good quality, mid-century and modern style sofas. They’re usually either uber pricey or schlocked together with minimal hardware and sagging unattractively in the middle. Is it too much to ask to find a snazzy long-lasting couch on a budget of under 2k?

Pam Kueber of Retro Renovation doesn’t think so, as evidenced by her comprehensive where-to shopping guide of this style of sofa. So dive in, test ‘em out and find the mid-century sofa of your DREAMS (on a budget!).
