How to hide your electrical outlets

Wednesday, June 29th, 2011

When you’ve sunk money, time and precious creative energy into a space to create the aesthetic that you envisioned, sometimes any little hiccup in that design can be become a visual nuisance. Electrical outlets and switches, though essential, can be an unsightly blemish in an otherwise stunningly designed room. You don’t have to trash that carefully placed tile mosaic feature with a glaring white block switch cover. Here are some great ideas via Houzz.com on how to work those necessary details INTO your design in the most pleasing manner possible:

Bathtubs with drawers

Monday, June 27th, 2011

I’ve long been a fan of the functionality of a bed with drawers underneath. In a day of stuff + more stuff, and in some locations housing prices prohibiting the attainment of a spacious abode, storage is a necessity. The Keops Evolution bathtub by the Royo Group, combines luxury and sleekness with an overwhelmingly useful feature: drawers.

Bathrooms, especially in older homes, can be quite tight, pitting the standup shower against the toilet in a tight turnaround to bump into the sink. If you find yourself in a cramped bathroom situation the solution might just be to add more storage in less space. The Keops Evolution tub offers just that, and doesn’t sacrifice style. You can choose any combination between acrylic or walnut finishes and white or black furniture to create your optimal look.

Friday, June 24th, 2011

A Herman Miller exhibit, Good Design: Stories by Herman Miller, has moved on here to Austin and will be residing at the Austin Museum of Art through September 11th. The exhibit explores the design problem-solving tactics and choices that the West Michigan-based furniture company, Herman Miller, Inc, is known for. The exhibit utilizes drawings, models, prototypes, photographs, oral histories, and original designed objects to showcase the creation and evolution of many masterpieces of 20th and 21st century design by such artists as Gilbert Rohde, Ray & Charles Eames, George Nelson, Alexander Girard, Robert Propst, Steve Frykholm, Bill Stumpf and Don Chadwick, and others.

House lamps

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011

Are they birdhouses? Lamps? Pendant lights? Decorative, or practical? These House Lamps, designed by Kristian Aus for new Australian Interior product brand UNDER, are all of that and more.

I ADORE the simplicity and graphic power of these lamps. They would add such a welcome kick of kitsch, color and fun to a space. Sometimes product design exceeds what our eyes are used to seeing, and this is one of those cases. I’m head over heels for these bold, overtly simple and super fun lighting options.

“Dreaming” of furniture

Friday, June 10th, 2011

Designed to explore the idea of a lucid dream, a dream wherein the dreamer KNOWS that he or she is dreaming (some can even control their dreams), Israeli designer Yaarit Mechany’s furniture creations are as stunning as they are surprising.

Mechany couples ideas and thoughts about memories, nostalgia and fantasy with the traditional manual and mechanical design ways of Tel-Aviv to build these genius pieces of art/furniture. The Tip Toe bench is an attempted emulsion, two opposite things being forced to combine in order to create a more advanced and lovely version of itself. The wired lamp is playful, yet modern. Striking yet muted. It’s a great piece of design, with a very practical function.

Conserve water or else

Wednesday, June 8th, 2011

How much water do you use while washing your hands? How many times a day do you wash your hands? Yan Lu thought about these questions… and then he created this fishbowl faucet to illustrate to people how precious water is, and hopefully promote a more conservationist attitude.

When you turn the water on to wash, the water in the fishbowl starts draining and the water level goes down. It’s a gentle, and demonstrative, reminder that with each second we waste, we’re using up a very valuable resource.

I think I would replace the poor fishy with a toy replica instead though! Wouldn’t you?
