Kitchen color

Wednesday, April 20th, 2011

Spring is here, and summer is close on her heels. When this time of year rolls around I get inspired by color. Pure and vibrant, splashes of color in your kitchen, traditionally the most occupied room of the home, can be the perfect pop that you need to brighten things up. Cabinets and countertops are often best left neutral (though outrageous countertop materials can be an excellent crowd-pleasing choice), but one fantastic way to add a little “kapow” to your kitchen is through multi-colored appliances.

Dacor recently introduced 24-inch dishwashers in an array of colors, catering to the more funky modern aesthetic that a lot of homeowners are craving.

Bluestar is going above and beyond, now offering their ranges in a whopping 190 colors. Not only are their ranges fantastic quality, but now you can get one to match ANY color scheme you could dream up. What’s more fun than that!?

The trusty and ever-valuable Kitchenaid broke the mold early when they started offering their mixers in a bevy of fun shades. And how about a cool blue microwave to set the color tone? With this mod Bodum toaster you can’t go wrong if you’re on the hunt for some color!

If you’re like me, and your kitchen is straight out of the 50s, these retro Northstar fridges and ranges might be just the ticket to finish out your cutesy cooking space!

Timbuktu: first iPad magazine for kids

Monday, April 18th, 2011

Dubbed as the “1st magazine for children”, Timbuktu for the iPad impresses with it’s stunning graphics and interactive capabilities that make the kiddos squee! It’s available for download for free in the app store and is a must-try for 7 to 10 year olds.

The imagery is clean and bubbly bright, a visual treat for the wee imaginative ones. But it’s the media features, the interactive audio interviews with each character, that are the real draw here. The slide and touch functionality is smooth and effective, and easy for those chubby little fingers to navigate. Fun topics in its first issue include popsicles, arctic beaches, serenades, letters from India and conversations with animals living in extremely cold environments.

Timbuktu magazine for kids on the iPad is one big huge dose of learning wrapped up in user-friendly categories and an imagination + technology approach that is entertaining and fun.

Earth friendly materials

Friday, April 15th, 2011

When buying a new surfaces for your home, including countertop and flooring, there are many things to consider. The cost, surely. But also durability, method of cleaning, heat resistance and how it LOOKS to you. Increasingly, though, consumers are adding another question to tick off their list, and that’s how earth friendly the material is.

Manufacturers are taking note too, churning out more and more green products, and retailers aren’t hesitating to stuff their shelves with them. Being earth-conscious isn’t only the right thing to do, but it also just so happens to be the “in” thing as well. Today there are more options than ever for the environmental loveys, and the selection is only bound to increase.

Teragren is a bamboo flooring manufacturer that has championed strict environmental standards. From their inception they have been committed to developing and manufacturing beautiful bamboo products that Reduce dependence on dwindling timber resources, rely on renewable-resource materials, adhering to stringent, environmentally sensitive specifications. You may be surprised with what you find, and for what price you find it. The quality of these products are sure to shine bright in your home, and maybe even help out this earth of ours a bit in the process.

Roundup: Wallpaper that’ll put spring in your step

Wednesday, April 13th, 2011

Wallpaper gets a bad rap. Yes, it can be difficult to remove. But if you choose your space carefully and apply it correctly it’s really not that annoying to deal with. Besides the fact that it can be a quick one-step trick to getting a brighter and more more robust feeling in a space, it really allows the personality of the person who chose it to shine through.

And the uses are endless! You can use it inside a glass-front or open-shelved cabinet to provide a fun pop of pattern on the back wall of your shelving. If you really want to get sassy, pick a heavily patterned wallpaper like this striped paper, and apply it to a small-ish area to draw MAJOR attention to the area of your choosing! So here we go, a ‘springy’ roundup of great papers to satisfy that ‘blooming’ itch to freshen up your abode.

Pink kitchens

Monday, April 11th, 2011

Color is a whiz-bang change that can transform a so-so space into spectacular. The mood and the feeling of a space can turn on a dime with a dose of saturated color. A bold choice, and not necessarily an easy sell, a pink kitchen may just add the quirk and pitch-perfect punch to your drab kitchen.

Forget Barbie and Ken, and think mod, elegant and playful! Pair a hot pink with modern white and stainless steel appliances and surfaces for a chic and clean feel. Adore retro? Nab that vintage style pink range oven and incorporate some cutesy sweet elements like chintzy floral curtains and vintage utensils hung on a pegboard backdrop to achieve a kitschy 50′s feel. Want to make a splash at your big BBQ or family dinner? Add a pot o’pink to your cooking space and guarantee the “whoas” and “wows” will follow.

Technology in the kitchen

Friday, April 8th, 2011

Every once in a while, a product is released that is so ridiculously cool, but absolutely unnecessary (for most folks) and is a slap in the face to all things sensible. These days technology is everywhere, even in our kitchens.

LG is making available later this year an HDTV refrigerator with two screens. TWO screens. It’s a flashy toy to be sure, expensive certainly… but a necessity? Hardly. The larger of the two screens is a 15″ complete with a tuner. The smaller screen on the left door displays weather, has a recipe bank and even has a to-do list. So I guess now you can check the temperature outside, plan your nightly meal and check things off your list, all while you’re standing there getting some crushed ice.

And Siemens isn’t far behind LG in the kitchen technology realm. Say hello to the multimedia ventilation hood! It features a 17″ (remember when we watched regular non HDTVs in that size?) high resolution TV screen with a DVD and CD player. It’s a modern and pretty hood, but what if you get grease splatter on your fancy little TV?

WHAT will they think of next?!

Color combo: khaki and tangerine

Wednesday, April 6th, 2011

New color trends come into focus every year, and this year is no different. Make way for khaki and tangerine! Khaki is vastly neutral and provides a great warm base for an accentuating color. You can pair it with cool colors, like a bright blue, OR warm colors, like our suspect, tangerine. Tangerine is a kicked up version of orange, and is all the rage in both fashion and home decor right now. It’s bright, bold and uber happy!

Houzz.com recently featured this color combo and after a quick web search I found that MANY other people are digging it as well.
